What if (when) America gets nuked!

At some point in time, America will eventually get nuked. Disregarding, for the moment, the specific type of nuclear device that a terrorist might use, I'd like to focus on just where such a device might ignited...

Just for the sake of argument, let's assume that at some point some terrorist organization will effectively detonate an existing (i.e. stolen)¹ nuclear device with a nominal yield of 475 kilotons². The relevant questions would then center around the devices geographic location and the elevation above ground level. Let's look at each...

Geographic location

When ever a nuclear device is detonated, large amount of radioactive nucleotides are generated, primarily from the debris that are sucked up into the expanding ball of fire. The breakdown or half life of these particles can be anywhere from seconds to thousands of years and they can be scattered far down wind of wherever they are generated. This debris field can stretch for hundreds of miles, sickening or killing all who come in contact wit it. So, the 'fallout field' can be of importance to the terrorists as to where they place the bomb. Some likely locations might be Kansas City, Chicago or points east as the prevailing wind currents would then affect other population centers.

Elevation

Critical to the type of damage a device would do concerns how high up it is. A low ground burst would max out the damage radius while at the same time would generate a lot of fallout, while a high latitude burst would max the EMP effect which could effectively render many electronic devices inoperative. In either case, many millions of people would be effectively terrorized and that, after all is the real intent in the first place!

The bottom line is that any device, be it crude or sophisticated, would effectively place a high degree of stress on the psychological profile and resilience of our nation. Markets would likely crash, transportation would be disrupted, food networks hurt and it would take a long long time for things to get back to 'normal. Just look at what three planes did to America in 2001! They ended up costing the country close to a trillion dollars and changed the way we do business and live our lives to this day!

The intelligence curve and political affiliations!

The question that came to my mind while viewing an intelligence curve one afternoon was whether or not there was a correlation that existed between a person's IQ and there they fell on the political spectrum. Perhaps not surprisingly, there were studies that supported both concepts; that smart people gravitate both towards conservative values and liberalism and vice versa for those of lesser intelligence.

My personal theory is that party affiliation can be driven both by intelligence and by maturity in a temporal manner. That is to say, young smart people tend to be liberal and then as they age and become more monied, assume progressively more conservative values. On the other side of the spectrum, people of lesser intelligence tend to be of either political persuasion when young, but then tend to favor any political institution that will give them added support as they age and find themselves in in more challenging financial circumstances; ergo they tend to swing further left as time goes on. The end result is a stacking either left or right depending on age and financial status.

President Obama's worst nightmare!

March 15, 2014 dawned like any other day. President Obama rose from his bed knowing that he was facing some tough challenges as food riots were erupting across the land. Decades of reckless spending had finally come home to roost as double digit inflation caused wholesale food prices to rocket. Unknown to him, an offshoot al Qaeda group was making final preparations to detonate a nuclear device in down town Manhattan. Also, unknown to him and the rest of civilization, a major earthquake was about occur just off the coast of southern California. The resulting 50 foot high tsunami would devastate Los Angeles and other nearby cities causing billions of damage not to mention the shutdown and implosion of the Diablo Canyon nuclear power facility which released millions of cubic tons of radioactive debris.

Later that day, standing in front of a podium before a rapt national audience, our president calmly blamed it all on Bush....

I wonder how history will treat Obama?

How will history treat our President Obama? Man, that's a toughie. I think that any review would want to start with what he has actually accomplished in over 5 years in office:

OK, not much there so far, but to be fair, he had a lot of problems with the economy he inherited from Bush (ahem). But take heart! Obama still has THREE MORE YEARS to enact legislation that he feels is important and pressing! Let's see now, there is;

A Carbon Tax on coal that will cause our electric rates to 'necessarily skyrocket' - his words, not mind.

An Immigration Bill to allow most anyone who wants to join the American Democratic Party to just come on in. Yeah, that outta work out well.

More and better Entitlement Programs to fund things like our still failing system of Education ... Uh, you might ask where's the money gonna come for that - why the President's stash of course!

A Balanced Budget! Actually, I'm just jacking you on that one....

Your Gov is right here waiting for you! Yeah, sure!

A Nation in disarray!

It is my hope, that at some point during this latest Federal shutdown, a few of the 800K furloughed employees will contemplate on what's going to happen to all of us going forward. There are three things that I can think of off hand....

First, they will come to understand that these Federal shutdowns will become the 'new normal'. Out of necessity, they can only increase in number and each time the severity will be greater. Why? Because there is no where else for this Country to run! The Administration's back is up against the wall and everyone knows it. At the time of this post, another CR is just six weeks away! And, there will be yet another after that in December... Crisis after crisis after crisis with no country who can or is even able to bail us out! Today, the only infusion of 'new' money to support our failing economy is the 'funny money' that the Fed is printing. And, even that isn't going to work much longer. Our Congressmen and women, now at only a 10% approval rating, are coming under increasing pressure to raise more taxes in order to continue pumping billions and billions into frayed entitlement and infrastructure programs. An orgy of spending by Capitol Hill that, in or itself, needs four trillion a year just to keep itself afloat!

Second. Obamacare is not only just a train wreck. It's an infected chancre of convoluted legislation whose poison will take years to work its way through the body politic. And, by the time all the supporters of this law, (the scared, the old and the infirm) come to realize they've been thrown under the bus, it will be far too late. (Incidentally, I predict the year twenty fourteen will be a horrible election cycle for the Democratic Party. But, you know what? At that juncture it simply won't matter who is or who comes into power). By 2014, the country may well be reeling from the cumulative effects of massive tax increases even as a bloated, cancerous and incompetent government grows ever larger. Money will flow uphill like some incredible river with only a trickle coming back down to the average citizen. Money that no longer expands the economy, but rather sustains the slow rot that is killing it. Millions of lives will be permanently wrecked from the synergistic effects of poor & inadequate healthcare, too few working hours and a general loss of faith. (And, our boy Obama? Why, he'll still have two more glorious years to go...)

Third. As our Republic reels continues to reel back and forth from one crisis to another, I'm sure the other world powers will be eying this piece of real estate with increasing interest. Iran, soon to be a nuclear power, may start things off with a nice little war with Israel as they try their best to wipe that country off the face of the map. In that event, I predict Obama will just stand by and watch. Maybe he'll give a good speech. I don't know. But, if he does, it will be an empty speech none the less. You see, America is fast losing her status as the last bastion of freedom. She has become darker and more diminished in the eyes of the world. and, she may well be forced to stand idly by as Muslim extremists consolidate and bring together a new caliphate – an assembly of Islamic peoples that will bow (willingly or not willingly) to Allah, while the women of that world are reduced to the status of cattle.

Are these the disjointed musings of a demented old man? On this day, while sitting at home, I'm not even 100 feet from a gate that bars me access to a much loved park... Let the games begin!
